Self Defense Workshop

By Penny Reed

Every year, many young adults gain freedom and go off into the world. It can be frightening to have that new level of independence, especially if one does not have the tools to properly protect themselves. With the increasing risk of violence at college campuses, our Youth Commission sought to help the youths of our community feel safe.

This past August, our Youth Commission hosted a free self-defense workshop at the local community center, offering a valuable learning experience for residents of all ages, but catered to young adults. Partnering with a local self-defense studio, the event brought together over 35 participants, all eager to learn essential safety techniques. Attendees practiced a range of skills, from basic defensive maneuvers to strategies for staying aware and preventing dangerous situations.

The event was a success, with many participants highlighting how empowered they felt after the session. Our expert instructors were praised for their engaging teaching style and ability to make the techniques accessible to people with no prior experience.

One of the key factors behind the strong turnout was our promotional strategy. We designed digital flyers and shared them on Instagram, which played a big role in attracting participants. We also posted flyers throughout the community, helping to spread the word to those who may not be as active online.

For other YACs looking to host similar events, we learned some valuable lessons along the way. While the turnout was great, we recognized that we could do more to attract specifically younger participants. Our social media efforts were present, but we hope to increase engagement with teens by incorporating more in-person promotions at schools. Another strategy is working with school administrators, using extra credit or other initiatives for students to attend.

A big thank you to the local studio that generously offered to teach our community at no price. In addition, acknowledge to the photographer whose photos we used to encourage more participation in the future. We believe events like these are essential for fostering safer communities. We hope to continue hosting self-defense workshops in the future and encourage other towns to do the same. Empowering people with the tools and knowledge to protect themselves is something that benefits everyone.
